Head lice are wingless, small insects, varying in colour from yellow to
brown, living exclusively in hair and feeding on blood.

An adult louse may reach the size of 3-4 mm.

During its lifespan, the female louce produces between 200-300 eggs, known as nits,
which are small and oval.

While sucking on blood, the lice also inject their saliva in the scalp, which leads to
hypersensitivity, accompanied by itching and severe irritation.

Lice infection may occur directly, from head to head, or indirectly, for example
by using one’s comb or bed sheets.

Lice cannot survive away from the head’s skin for more than 2-3 days.

Diagnosis is confirmed by carefuly examining the hair, looking for lice or eggs.

One should be checked especially if one’s head is itchy or whenever there is a pediculosis
epidemy (in schools/kindergartens).
