Head lice are wingless, small insects, varying in colour from yellow to brown, living exclusively in hair and feeding on blood. An adult louse may reach the size of 3-4 mm.
During its lifespan, the female louse produces between 200-300 eggs, known as nits, which are small and oval. These, cling strongly to hair trough a very sticky substance. The eggs take 7 days to hatch and after 10 days the insect is fully grown. While sucking on blood, the lice also inject their saliva in the scalp, which leads to hypersensitivity, accompanied by itching and severe irritation.

Lice spread easily from person to person, and so children may return home from kindergarten or school, complaining of itchy scalp. Therefore one can get lice very easily but getting rid of them is one hard task. Even the cleanest children may get lice and there is no shame in that, since they are not a sign of lack of personal hygiene. If the children get them it is very likely that soon they may spread to the whole family. Lice are very small insects which feed on scalp blood, so an itchy scalp represents one of the earliest signs.
Do not believe that lice jump from one person to another, as this is just a popular belief. One can get them by direct contact, afterwards they lay eggs and that’s about it. The itchy sensation may appear even several months after the lice infestation, but the allergy itself may cause the real problems as the scalp may turn red. Head lice are easy to detect, with the naked eye and the eggs they lay are of white colour, sticked on the hairs thus they can sometimes be easily mistaken for dandruff.
